Contre-Histoire de la Séparation
The book Counter History of Separation is based on the eponymous film by Etienne Chambaud and Vincent Normand (52min, 2010), which it translates in the space of the book. The voice-over in the film has been made into a one-edition book, which was rephotographed according to the technique the authors used to make the film. The outcome is a photography book that is as much a text document than an imaginary scene.
Counter History of Separation begins during the Reign of Terror, in 1793, which simultaneously witnesses the apparition of the guillotine on the revolutionary stage and the creation of the modern museum. It ends in 1977, when the last decapitation by guillotine occurred and when the Centre Pompidou, itself a new museum paradigm, was inaugurated. It explores the space opened by the optical and political limits of modernity, by tracking the dissolution of the functions of the guillotine and the modern museum in what the authors define as ‘the Decapitated Museum’.

Le livre Contre-Histoire de la Séparation est basé sur le film éponyme d’Etienne Chambaud et Vincent Normand (52min, 2010), dont il constitue la traduction dans l’espace du livre. Le texte de la voix-off a été reproduit sous la forme d’un livre à tirage unique, puis photographié dans le dispositif de tournage du film, donnant lieu à un livre de photographies oscillant entre le statut de document textuel et celui de scène imaginaire.
Contre-Histoire de la Séparation débute pendant la Terreur, en 1793, lors de l’apparition de la guillotine sur la scène révolutionnaire et de la création du musée moderne. Il se termine en 1977, année de la dernière décapitation par guillotine et de l’inauguration d’un nouveau prototype de musée, le Centre Pompidou. Il explore l’espace ouvert par le mode de découpe optique et politique inventé par la modernité, en retraçant la dissolution des fonctions du musée moderne et de la guillotine dans ce que les auteurs appellent le « Musée Décapité ».
