Presenting the publication “1946, 1947, 1948 – The missing years of the most beautiful Swiss books” and meditating on the convenience of jury selections.
“1946, 1947, 1948 – The missing years of the most beautiful Swiss books” is a self-initiated research by Corina Neuenschwander and Roland Früh. Launched in 2009 it has been the catalyst for a series of exhibitions and events, workshops with students, and most recently the publication of a 168-pages publication and a web-archive at www.missingbooks.ch.
Set out with an initial plan to reconstruct the fameless gap of three years in the history of the competition ‘The most beautiful Swiss books’ – the research moved on from Max Bill, Jan Tschichold and their contemporaries, and gradually expanded with the attempt to also address present-day issues of book design, production and publishing through presentations and discussions in public. At the same time came the ambition to formulate a counter-proposal to the existing jury procedures in competitions by sporting a more subjective process, where ‘experts’ decide for their own criteria and contribute their personal selection. The sum of clear, sharp individual decisions, so the thesis, may just as well represent an alternative to the seemingly objective agreement of a jury.
As an editorial team, graphic designer Corina Neuenschwander and art historian Roland Früh collaborate on self initiated projects. Before graduating from Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem in 2012, Corina has been working for design studios in London and is now independent graphic designer in Amsterdam and Zurich. Roland writes about graphic design and related topics. He was assisting Robin Kinross at Hyphen Press in London until 2010, and is now visiting tutor for design research and theory at ECAL, Lausanne and programme co-ordinator at Werkplaats Typografie, Arnhem.

Une présentation, pour la première fois en France, et la dernière fois en Europe, de la publication “1946, 1947, 1948 – Les années oubliées des plus beaux livres suisses” en présence des éditeurs Roland Früh et Corina Neuenschwander.
“1946, 1947, 1948 – Les Années oubliées des plus beaux livres suisses” est un projet initié par Corina Neuenschwander et Roland Früh en 2009. Ce travail de recherche s’est développé à travers une série d’expositions, workshops et évènements – en partie archivée en ligne sur www.missingbooks.ch – pour aboutir à l’ouvrage publié cette année par Niggli Verlag, Slugen.
Comme son nom l’indique, le projet consistait, à l’origine, en une tentative de “reconstruction” de trois années d’interruption dans l’histoire du fameux concours annuel des “Plus beaux livres suisses”. D’une recherche historique sur Max Bill, Jan Tschichold et le design graphique dans le contexte de l’immédiat après-guerre, les enjeux se sont précisés pour rencontrer ceux de l’édition contemporaine. Les différents moments publics du projet ont été l’occasion de discuter de la production et du design de livre aujourd’hui.
En parallèle, c’est la forme même de ce type de concours que les éditeurs ont souhaité interroger: au lieu d’en reconduire les règles, Les années oubliées… propose une alternative subjective et engagée aux protocoles de sélection et de classement traditionnel par jury. Plusieurs personnalités ont été ainsi invitées à formuler leurs propres critères de choix, et à constituer chacune un ensemble d’ouvrages publiés entre 1946 et 1948. Au lieu de l’expertise et de l’accord soi-disant objectif d’un jury, la somme de ces sélections individuelles, éminemment personnelles, se présente comme une approche critique et passionnée du livre contemporain.
Diplômée de la Werkplaats Typografie, Arnhem en 2012, Corina Neuenschwander est aujourd’hui designer graphique indépendante travaillant entre Zürich et Amsterdam après avoir collaboré avec différents studios de graphisme à Londres. Roland Früh écrit sur des sujets relatifs au graphisme et à l’édition. Il assistait Robin Kinross chez Hyphen Press à Londres jusqu’en 2010 et est aujourd’hui conférencier à l’ECAL, Lausanne et co-coordinateur de programme à la Werkplaats Typografie, Arnhem. A côté de leurs activités personnelles respectives, Corina Neuenschwander et Roland Früh travaillent sur des projets indépendants.
