Centre Georges Pompidou, THE ADVANTAGE OF EXPLANATION

A screening programme curated by castillo/corrales, as part of the “Vidéo et après” cycle, on the invitation of Christine Van Assche and Florence Parot.

Centre Pompidou, Monday 28 February, 7 PM.

It is somewhat taken for granted that artists catalyze altered states and keep being busy with the dissolution of the boundaries between disciplines. Insofar as they state who they are, what’s their agenda, and what they may stand for, they will even be able to dictate festivals of forms, contents, and discovery through doing.

To such gentle demands, requirements and invites, Les Levine, Martin Kippenberger, General Idea, Jenny Holzer, Nam June Paik, Michael Smith, Raymond Pettibon, Dara Birnbaum or William Wegman reply by presenting themselves first, showing off, advertising for their positions. Their videos belong to a TV rather than a film culture: sitcoms, animal documentaries, jingles, interludes, ads and educational programs become then genre movies, tools with which to respond to established formats and naturalized languages.

castillo/corrales is a uniquely multidisciplinary group of cultural producers based in Belleville, who share a distinctive commitment to artists already or about to be taken for granted.

Carte blanche à castillo/corrales dans le cadre du cycle “Vidéo et après”, à l’invitation de Christine Van Assche et Florence Parot.

Pourvoyeur d’expériences et aventurier des états de conscience, il est tenu pour acquis que l’artiste constitue une identité incontestable – à condition qu’elle ou il n’oublie pas de la décliner, d’afficher son agenda politique et de bien indiquer les frontières qu’il ou elle serait susceptible de transgresser.

Aux exigences formelles de justification et de reconnaissance, Les Levine, Martin Kippenberger, General Idea, Jenny Holzer, Nam June Paik, Michael Smith, Raymond Pettibon, Dara Birnbaum ou William Wegman répondent par l’exposé publicitaire, l’autodéfinition, le développement démonstratif. Leurs films sont issus d’une culture davantage télévisuelle que cinématographique: sitcom, documentaire animalier, jingle, interlude, publicité, document pédagogique et film amateur, deviennent avec eux des équivalents du film de genre. Autant de manières de s’expliquer et de se mesurer aux formats établis, aux langages naturalisés.

castillo/corrales est un groupe de producteurs interdisciplinaires basé à Belleville, qui s’intéressent aux artistes tenus pour acquis et ceux en passe de le devenir.
