This workshop was part of “The Book Society” — a project devoted to the most experimental forms of production in publishing, which Peep-Hole is organizing in collaboration with the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Villa Croce in Genova.
“Along the grain” is organized by Paris-based publisher Paraguay Press. It is open to anyone who is concerned by the circulation of texts and ideas, and how they take a physical form.
During a short but intensive period of two days we will discuss the means of production, and how production is an act of publishing. By focusing on the spine of the book, materially and conceptually, we will experience (and examine) the way it holds (and brings) « things » together
The participants are invited to bring four types of items :
– A project they did.
- Something they would never do.
– An object that is a source of inspiration for their publishing practice.
– Some material for a future project.
– On DAY# 1, we will read some great pieces of writing, discuss them together, and we will start working with everybody’s material.
– After an inventory of binding practices, DAY#2 will lead us to imagine how to arrange a succession of pages, to take technical risks when putting them together, and to figure out challenging ways to build the space of the book.

Along the grain è un workshop tenuto dalla casa editrice Paraguay Press (Parigi). Il workshop è aperto a tutti quelli che sono interessati alla circolazione dei testi e delle idee, e a come questi prendano una forma fisica. Durante un breve ma intenso periodo di due giorni si discuterà sul significato della produzione come processo editoriale.
Concentrandosi materialmente e concettualmente sul “dorso” del libro, il gruppo sperimenterà ed esaminerà il modo in cui esso tiene insieme le “cose”.
I partecipanti sono invitati a portare:
– Un progetto realizzato
– Una cosa che non vorrebbero mai fare
– Un oggetto che è fonte di ispirazione nella loro pratica editoriale
– Alcuni materiali per un possibile progetto futuro
GIORNO# 1 – si leggeranno alcuni brani tratti da grandi capolavori di narrativa, si discuteranno insieme, e si inizierà a lavorare sui materiali portati da ciascuno.
GIORNO#2 – dopo un inventario delle principali pratiche di rilegatura, si proverà ad immaginare l’organizzazione di una successione di pagine, facendosi carico di qualche rischio tecnico, e risolvendo le difficoltà insite nella costruzione dello spazio-libro.
